Milwaukee 2967-20 vs 2962-20

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2" High Torque Impact Wrench (Friction Ring) (2967-20) and the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2" Mid-Torque Impact Wrench (Friction Ring) (2962-20) share the M18 platform, a 1/2-inch drive and a friction ring. They sit in different torque classes, and that class is the main reason to pick one. This comparison is based on Milwaukee's published specifications, not on use of the tools.

Torque class

Milwaukee's page for the 2967-20 states up to 1,200 ft-lbs of fastening torque and 1,600 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque when used with M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE batteries, so the figures depend on the battery used. The 2962-20 page lists 650 ft-lbs of nut-busting torque. The 2967-20 is the tool for large bolts, heavy equipment and seized hardware. The 2962-20 handles typical automotive and general repair work. See mid-torque versus high-torque impact wrenches for more on the split.

Size

The 2967-20 is listed at 7.6 inches long, and the 2962-20 at 6.0 inches. The 2962-20 page gives its weight as 5.1 lbs with a 5.0Ah battery.

Controls

Both have 4-mode Drive Control. The 2967-20 has a bolt removal mode and an auto-shutoff mode that limits torque to 50 ft-lbs for hand-tight work. On the 2962-20, mode 4 adds auto shut-off limited to 35 ft-lbs plus bolt removal control, which slows speed once a bolt breaks loose. The 2962-20 page lists speeds of 0-1,250, 0-1,950 and 0-2,575 RPM across its modes. Milwaukee shows a 5-year tool warranty for both, and both have a Quick Friction Ring or friction ring anvil for tool-free socket changes.

Bare tools

Both are bare tools that work only with Milwaukee M18 batteries, so battery and charger are separate.

Most home garages do not need the high-torque class, and the mid-torque wrench is easier to hold overhead and to fit into tight spaces. Choose the 2967-20 only if you expect jobs that need its extra rating. See our impact wrenches category for alternatives.
