How We Evaluate Products
WorkshopCompare is a research site. We do not own or test the tools listed here. Everything on the site comes from published information, mainly the manufacturers' own specifications. This page says what that covers and where it stops.
Where the Information Comes From
- Manufacturer specifications. Voltage and battery platform, motor type, speed, torque, capacity, weight, kit contents and warranty are taken from the maker's product page or manual.
- Retailer listings. Product names, images and model numbers come from the retailer a product links to. For products sold on Amazon, the price shown is supplied by Amazon and carries the date and time it was fetched.
- Model numbers. We match products by the maker's model number so that a bare tool and a kit, or an older and a newer version, are not confused.
How Comparisons Are Built
Tools are compared only within the same category, on the specifications that separate them: a drill on chuck size, speed ranges and whether it has a hammer function, an impact wrench on drive size and torque class, and so on. We also note what a specification means for the kind of work a tool suits. Where we name a pick, it is a judgement based on those specifications and on what is included for the money, not a test result.
Limits You Should Know About
- Maker figures are not measured by us. Torque, run time, air volume and similar numbers are the manufacturer's claims, measured under its own conditions.
- Makers quote figures differently. One brand's torque or run-time number is often not directly comparable with another's. We show each figure as the maker states it and do not rank brands on such figures alone.
- Specifications cannot tell you everything. How a tool feels in the hand, how loud it is and how long it lasts are outside what a specification sheet shows.
- Listings change. Models are replaced and kit contents vary by retailer. Check the retailer's page for the exact item before you buy.
What We Don't Do
- No testing claims. We do not say we tested, used or measured a tool, because we have not.
- No retailer star ratings or review counts. We do not show or summarise customer ratings from Amazon or any other store.
- No pay-for-placement. A brand cannot buy a listing or a position on this site.
Where Products Are Sold
Each product links to one retailer. Brands that Amazon sells link to Amazon. Brands sold mainly through a particular store link to that store instead, and for those we show no price: follow the link to see the current one.
How We Make Money
As an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn a commission when you buy through links to other retailers. This costs you nothing extra. Some retailer links on the site are plain links that pay us nothing.
WorkshopCompare is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any tool manufacturer. Brand and product names belong to their owners.
