DeWalt DCD771C2 vs Craftsman CMCD700C1
The DeWalt 20V MAX Drill/Driver Kit (DCD771C2) and the Craftsman V20 1/2" Drill/Driver Kit (CMCD700C1) are both entry-level, two-speed, 1/2-inch cordless drill/drivers, and both sit in the "$50–100" price tier. On a shelf they look alike. The manufacturer specifications show a few real differences, and this comparison is based on those specifications, not on hands-on use.
Power and speed
DeWalt rates the DCD771C2 motor at 300 unit watts out (UWO) with a two-speed transmission covering 0-450 and 0-1,500 RPM. Craftsman lists the CMCD700C1 at 280 unit watts out, with a two-speed gearbox of 0-350 and 0-1,500 RPM. Top speed is the same. The DeWalt gives a slightly higher power rating and a higher low-gear speed, which suits driving screws faster. The Craftsman low range is slower, which can help when you want more control. Both manufacturers list a brushed motor.
Chuck and light
The DeWalt has a 1/2-inch single sleeve ratcheting chuck. The Craftsman has a 1/2-inch keyless chuck and a built-in LED work light. Both drills have a built-in work light: Craftsman lists an LED light, and DeWalt's manual for the DCD771 describes a worklight above the trigger.
What is in the kit
DeWalt's page for DCD771C2 lists two 20V MAX compact batteries, a compact charger and a contractor bag. Craftsman's page for CMCD700C1 lists one V20 battery, a charger and a double-sided bit. Craftsman's page gives the battery as 1.3Ah in the contents list but 1.5Ah in the product title, so check the capacity before buying. Check what is in the box before buying, because kit contents vary by seller.
Battery platform
Each drill locks you into its maker's system. The DeWalt uses 20V MAX batteries and the Craftsman uses V20 batteries, and the Craftsman works only with Craftsman V20 batteries and tools. If you already own batteries from one brand, that usually decides the question. Both pages list a 3-year limited warranty.
